The GameStop Corporation is a US-based video game and entertainment software retailer headquartered in Grapevine, Texas. The company operates nearly 6,500 retail stores in the United States, Canada, Austria, Australia, Finland, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Puerto Rico, Portugal, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Over the past few years, GameStop has become increasingly more popular and opened 400 new stores in 2009 alone. Aside from GameStop retail stores, the company also operates stores under the names EB Games, Software ETC, Babbage?s, Micromania, MovieStop, Planet X and FuncoLand. E-Commerce websites run by GameStop include EBgames.com, GameStop.com and ImpulseDriven.com. Magazines released by GameStop include Game Informer, Kongregate and Jolt Online Gaming. Aside from magazines and video games, GameStop also distributes strategy guides for a variety of its video games and software. GameStop began as Babbage?s, which was a small software retail store in Dallas, Texas. The company grew over the years and GameStop Corp was formed in 1994 through a variety of mergers and acquisitions including a merger with FuncoLand in 2000, Electronics Boutique in 2005 and Gamesworld in 2008, and Micromania in 2008 as well. Acquisitions include Rhino Video Games, Spawn Labs and Impulse and Free Record Shop. The magazine Game Informer was introduced in the 2000?s, which is sold mainly through subscriptions as a part of a rewards program offered by GameStop. GameStop retail stores offer new and used video and computer games and video game accessories along with the ability to sell or trade-in video games and accessories.
