Urban Outfitters is a retailer that operates five unique brands including Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain, and BHLDN. Originally opened in 1970 as The Free People?s Store in Philadelphia, PA, the name was changed shortly thereafter to Urban Outfitters. Appealing to young people, they quickly opened a second store. Products carried appeal to genres including hipsters, bohemian, vintage, retro, kitschy, and ironic. Free People is the company?s private label wholesale line and is sold in over 1,000 boutiques and chains. Headquartered at historic Philadelphia Navy Yard, Urban Outfitters received a National Preservation Honor Award and a Global Award for Excellence, both in 2007. The company is not without controversy. In 2003, they released a parody of Monopoly called ?Ghettopoly? as well as a shirt that said ?Everyone Loves a Jewish Girl? that also had dollar signs. In 2004, Urban Outfitters released Jesus Dress Up, which are magnetic paper dolls that include a crucified Christ. In 2006, the offered handgun-shaped Christmas ornaments in the Philadelphia location. The city had over 300 shooting-related deaths that year and this was widely condemned. 2007 saw the company attempt to market keffiyahs as ?peace scarves.? The uproar caused them to discontinue the sales. In 2008, there was a shirt that featured a Palestinian child holding an AK-47, emblaxoned with the word ?victimized.? In 2011, Urban Outfitters raised the ire of the Navajo Nation by selling a line of items featuring Native American designs, changing the name of the products after a cease-and-desist letter.
